Ferndale Preserve

Ferndale Preserve is located on the western shore of Lake Apopka along the Green Mountain Scenic Byway and just a few miles from Sugarloaf Mountain the highest point in peninsular Florida. This unique location gives the preserve a high point of 162' above sea level and a view of both Lake Apopka and on clear days the Orlando skyline. As if scenic vistas weren't enough the preserve boosts an enormous amount of wildlife. More than 190 species of birds, 50 species of butterflies, not to mention numerous mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. The preserve also contains a protected historical site that has been recreated in educational panels near the preserve's entrance.

The preserve has two trails open currently; a 1.6 miles equestrian/hiking trail (loop) and a 0.5 mile (one way) hiking/biking trail (unpaved) to the high point. There is also an extensive playground, restrooms, and an education kiosk. The future plans include observation towers, canoe/kayak launch, and several more miles of trails.

Though the preserve always holds something interesting there are certain times that are better than others for viewing birds, wildflowers, butterflies, and dragonflies:

Mid-April- Early May: Spring Bird Migration
May-Early June for Spring Wildflowers & Butterflies
Late May-September for Summer Wildflowers and Butterflies
Late-September to End of October for Fall Wildflowers & Butterflies
September-October for Dragonflies
Early to Mid-October for Fall Bird Migration
Mid-December to Mid-February for wintering birds

Highlight Species: Swallow-tailed Kite, American Alligator, Gopher Tortoise, Fence Lizard, Zebra Longwing Butterfly, Grasshopper Sparrow, Painted Bunting, Pine Snake, Silver Buckthorn (tree), Bald Eagle, Bobcat
